Art openings and exhibitions in Sydney and other places

Now showing: Myles Heskett @ Mart Gallery

THE VALLEYS OF ASH

Myles Heskett is a Sydney-based artist.

Encouraged to draw at a young age by his father, who was also an artist, Myles went on to study at the National Art School, graduating in 1999 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.

Now working mainly in oils on canvas and ink/mixed media on paper, Myles cites some of his artistic influences as Miro, Cy Twombly, Basquiat, Stanley Donwood and David Lynch.

Heavily involved in music, Myles is also a drummer and was a founding member of the rock band Wolfmother. He began working on this current collection after coming off a world tour in 2007.

Since leaving Wolfmother in 2008 Myles has continued his musical pursuits in the band Palace of Fire, touring with The Slew in early 2010 and recently beginning a new collaborative project Machete Moon.

The Valleys of Ash will be Myles’ second solo exhibition. His first, Inhabitants, in 2003, was a collection of paintings, prints and drawings.

Wolf Trails

Myles is publishing Wolf Trails in conjunction with the exhibition. The book features a selection of drawings from the sketchbook he carried with him while on tour with Wolfmother between 2005 and 2008.

Myles would draw while sitting in airports, planes, tour buses, hotel rooms and venues around the world and he describes his sketchbook as “my primary source of meditation when faced with the boredom of countless hours spent in transit.”

Wolf Trails will be available to view and purchase at Mart Gallery throughout the exhibition.

Exhibition will run from Friday 8th April - Saturday 30th April. Closed over Easter long weekend (Friday 22nd, Saturday 23rd, Sunday 24th, Monday 25th April, Tuesday 26th April).

MATTHEW GILLETT “PEACE INSIDE ANXIETY” Mart Gallery

When Mart Gallery is not busy working, we’re at The Annandale seeing a great band, and what do you know, there’s also some amazing artistc talent behind those doors! Introducing… Matthew Gillett.

Working in a busy pub, being consumed by moto x and surfing around the world is a crazy schedule for anyone who can also find time to paint. Being the Venue Manager of Sydney’s most loved music institution, The Annandale Hotel is a great environment to balance out what is a very active lifestyle choice. South Coast born Matthew Gillett wouldn’t have it any other way.

Surrounded by music and drawing inspiration from his own life has been the fire which has encouraged Matthew to take this journey. His passion for painting has brought him here to his debut art exhibition. The personal peace that creating art can bring is definitely something that anyone with a passion should pursuit. We all need to follow these urges, because it is inside each and every one of us.

It is definitely a dream realised when all of a sudden the art that you’ve created in your home studio comes to life in a gallery space. So we hope that you will join us for this very special occasion. There will be something there for everyone, art, music, good people, good times, even a special limited edition poster stamped and signed by the artist.

365 A year of Self-portraits by Andrew Günsberg
Canon presents new photographic exhibit by Andrew Günsberg
Pushing the boundaries of creativity and documenting a year in his life was the driving force behind ‘365’; a photographic exhibition of 365 self portraits by multi-media personality Andrew Günsberg, to be held 15 to 25 September at Sydney’s premiere art/music space - Mart Gallery.
The exhibition, supported by Canon Australia, is a momentary glimpse into each day of Andrew’s life during the past year. It’s an intriguing journey for the viewer, taking us places with Andrew such as Israel, Spain, the US, Australia and the Caribbean. There is a sense of voyeuristic pleasure in being a part of someone’s world, who is literally living in the moment. What’s more there’s a genuine warmth that comes from the subject, captured by the subject, which leaves you looking forward to a peak at what he gets up to tomorrow.
“Everywhere I went for a year, I travelled with a large camera bag, a Canon EOS 5D Mark II digital SLR camera, two light stands, and a tripod – in an effort to creatively document a year in my life. I had no idea when I began the project what kind of year it would be for me, though it turned out to be a fairly monumental one both career-wise and personally. Lucky I shot it!” said Andrew Günsberg.
“Canon Australia is delighted to support ‘365’ by Andrew Günsberg. The exhibition illustrates Andrew’s real passion for photography and how you can grow through the range of Canon’s EOS SLR cameras to take your photography to the next level,” said Chris Macleod, Brand Manager – Canon EOS, Canon Australia.
“‘365’ is an exhibition for those who want to be inspired and those who are looking to explore the creative possibilities that digital SLR photography has to offer,” said Chris.
“When Andrew started photography I always knew he’d be good. Having worked with him for many years, I knew he had a good eye and was a relentless perfectionist. He became so good at photography I even hired him to shoot two of the bands I manage! He’s the perfect mix of someone who’s creative and works in the music industry, as well as being the biggest music geek I know!” said Mel Nahas of Mart Gallery.
For those who can’t get to the exhibition, selected one-of-a-kind Polaroids from the series will be put up for auction online. For more details, head to andrewgunsberg.com.
